| The book Motocross Motorcycle Racing
begins with a history on Motocross and Scrambles covering important facts with black and white shots of
a pre war Scrambles another picture of the 1954 Motocross des Nations. |
Scrambles machines
were heavy and hard to handle, and riding them demanded as much physical strength as it did skill and
daring. In fact, the winner of an early scrambles race was often the contestant who was strong enough to push his motorcycle
through a mud hole before any of his fellow racers could.
Then, in 1930, a Swedish manufacturing company recognized the growing sales possibilities of a factory-produced machine for
scrambles racing. So it was that the Husqvarna Company of Sweden designed and built the Special racing Motorcycle, a bike
intended expressly for scrambles competition.

HISTORY OF THE SPORT
Since the turn of the century, motorcycle racing on dirt tracks and paved roads has been a popular pastime in the United States.
But the kind of motorcycle racing known as "motocross" is a relatively new sport to Americans. In fact, not many motorcycle
enthusiasts in the United States had even heard of motocross racing before the late 1960s, when the first motocross exhibition
series between American and European riders was held in California. Because they were new to this rough-and-tumble form of
motorcycle racing, the untrained American riders performed poorly in the early rounds against their experienced European competitors.
In Europe, where the sport originated, some form of motocross racing had existed for almost 40 years.
