American World
Champions
So much talent so
little room at the starting gate,
sometimes referred to as a "lost generation:' There were simply more
talented riders in America then there
were good-paying jobs. So several riders,
most notably Donny Schmit, Trampas Parker, and Bobby
Moore, packed their bags and went where the jobs
were, in Europe. |

"Trampas Who? Out of the Blue!"
read the head lines in a
KTM victory ad.
many within the U.S. were caught totally off guard.
Who is
Trampas Parker ? In
1989 Trampas Parker was a contender for the world
championship. The following year Parker won the 1989 FIM championship, and two years
later he added a
250cc FIM World Championship to his
resume.
Donny Schmit was another member of the so-called
"lost generation" of American motocrossers who
looked to Europe in the late 1980s when stateside
opportunities were hard to come by.
In 1990, and Schmit made a successful move to the
FIM championships riding a Suzuki. In his first
season overseas, he won the FIM 125cc World
Championship, and he followed that up with a 250cc
title in 1992.
In January of 1996—just two days after his 29th
birthday Donny Schmit died, suddenly and tragically,
as a result of complications of aplastic anemia.
Bobby Moore
Throughout most of his Grand Prix career, Moore rode under a German license and, in fact, scored three German national championships. But his career reached its zenith in 1994 when he became just the third American ever to win the FIM's 125cc World Championship.
